Lilly : Despite all the restrictions, I see so many cigarette butts around.
Ronnie : Yeah, we've posted notices for ages but they get ignored, Lilly.
Lilly : That notice looks like it was put up by Sir Walter Raleigh himself.

Look at all the discarded ashtrays too now people can't smoke inside, no butt's about it Sir Walter would be fuming !
9 Sep 2013 6:28am
@Doug: ha ha . . what have we started ?! (Ronnie)
Great find! Needs a little colour to stand out and have the effect wanted ..........
9 Sep 2013 7:26am
@Ellebelle: I did use a nicotine filter . . . (Ronnie)
Sir Walter would no doubt see all these signs as yet another plot against him!
9 Sep 2013 7:30am
There's something wrong with the graphic design of the notice Lilly, I am probably like most others who mistook it for "free wi-fi available here". Hence we all congregate in small knots with Smartphones in one hand and fags in the other.
(Someone had better explain that last remark to the Americans.)
9 Sep 2013 7:45am
@Curly: oh, no public-school inferences intended, Sir Curly ! (Ronnie)
It's a bit of a fag but we need to get Nick O'Teen on the case
9 Sep 2013 9:38am
@grouser: I was told Nick was asked to leave Ireland under a cloud, G'ser. (Ronnie)
Beyond the message, i like a lot the compo and how the blonde boards (filters ? ;) fit here, a painting-like one !
9 Sep 2013 9:59am
@k@: Yes, it has a kinda nicotine filter to it, I suppose . . (Ronnie)
@grouser: . . smoke, fire . . where's Arlo ?! (Ronnie)
With cigarettes, it's still the same problems.
Have a good week.
9 Sep 2013 10:25am
Cigarette butts are more than a nuisance. Not only are they ugly, but the carcinogenic chemicals in the filters end up in the water supply.
9 Sep 2013 11:07am
@Julie L. Brown: Strewth . . . what hope is there for us ? (Ronnie)
Since the smoking ban in all public places was introduce we have seen a dearth of these ad hoc ashtray areas. We recently stayed in a hotel and initially I thought they had actually used fag butts as a mulch around the garden plants rather than wood-chipped bark ! ! ! !
9 Sep 2013 11:08am
@Jules: Oh, my . .
The background looks like a color seen from tar staining. :-) While the laws against smoking in the States have good intentions, the results are butts piled up 15 feet away from entrances to public buildings where no ashtrays exist. Egads!
9 Sep 2013 12:21pm
@Steven: Yeah, same here, sadly . . . (Ronnie)
A dying breed to be sure Ronnie! One way or the other the problem will resolve itself! ;-)
9 Sep 2013 12:37pm
@Eric Cousineau: Yes, something in what you say there, Eric. (Ronnie)
Yuck ... glad that we know very few people who still smoke, cigarettes ... or fags. ;D
9 Sep 2013 12:57pm
@Judy aka L@dybug: It is widely banned fro public places here but it becomes all the more noticeable where it is permitted. But a tough habit to kick for those hooked on it. (Ronnie)
@Ana Lúcia: Yes, so I have learned from above . . not over yet, it seems. (Ronnie)
Oh, my heavens...I don't know where to begin with this one...the comments you have received are as "multi-directional" as a puff of smoke from Lauren Bacall's lips....Starting from the top - I DO know what a "fag" is in this context...but then I am 1,000 years old...I guess there are some Yanks who don't...Grouser's comment is great! J ulie's is absolutely correct - All I can add to this is that we live on a corner and our grass lawn has become a recpetacle for the butts of Butts who throw their Butts onto our lawn...I am contemplating the place ment of a sign like Ronnies but am afraid that it will only draw more butts..and Butts......Going to take a nap now...
9 Sep 2013 2:08pm
@Denny Jump Photo: ha ha . . keep the windows closed, Denny ! (Ronnie)
No if's n'butts, potatos is bland, Sir Walter used to say, we'll hooka 'em now, across the land, fags is 'ere to stay.
But, Sir Walter, the Queen exclaimed, you'll kill our subjects all. Ah, yes, dear Queen, but what you miss, is yer coffers will be full.
Good point Sir Walter, I've always wanted, a holiday somewhere blue. "Get them to smoke", Sir Water said, and your wishes will come true.
9 Sep 2013 2:14pm
@CElliottUK: More than a whiff of truth in all that, Chris !
Smokers should kick their butts or get their butts kicked.
9 Sep 2013 2:45pm
AW!!! Ronnie...
Must be ones he smoked inside the Tower of London before he went up in smokes....
9 Sep 2013 3:06pm
@Devi: Yes, 'The System' got him in the end . . was arrested and executed in 1618 I see. (Ronnie)
Oh I've learned something today ! I ignored all about Raleigh but now I'll be able to spread my new knowledge (not butts) around.
9 Sep 2013 3:24pm
@Veronique: Must admit I was a bit hazy (!) on it all . . learn a lot at O2S. (Ronnie)
A great plea for environmental protection!! Well thought and done! I'd like to know what Arlo thinks of all this. Does Sir Walter Raleigh also popularised tobacco in El Dorado???
9 Sep 2013 5:16pm
Surely by some enemy of Sir Walter, someone truly envious.
9 Sep 2013 5:41pm
Excellent illustration of your message. Looking at it on the bright side, this litter is less harmful than concentrated smoke in interiors.
9 Sep 2013 6:24pm
@Francisco Romero: Maybe . . but folks here are saying the butts contaminate the water supply, so . . I dunno . . (Ronnie)
SOme places here have taken it a step further and now ban smoking within a certain number of feet outside of the buildings as well as no smoking within the buildings. Being highly allergic to cigarette (or fag) smoke, I can now breathe easier when out in public. I am guessing Arlo is not happy about these no smoking rules, which probably were set in motion due to his activities.
9 Sep 2013 7:05pm
@Ruthiebear: Poor old Arlo . . y'll have me feeling sorry for him . . almost ! (Ronnie)
les interdictions sont faites pour être enfreintes, où serait le plaisir sinon ?
9 Sep 2013 7:32pm
Sorry Lilly & Ronnie, this time your dialogue beats me. I don't see any connection between sir Walter Raleigh and the sign about no smoking. Is that because I'm not Anglo-saxon or because I'm dumb? (probably both... (:-) Well anyway the pictures at left are a masterpiece of Trash Photography (don't laugh, I think it does exist!) and the sign at right is just a pale attempt on the part of Ronnie to be up to par with Lilly... sorry to be so crude. Now please explain to me where W. R. gets in this story. (:-)
9 Sep 2013 7:51pm
@Longroute: I was thinking a bit local on this one - Sir Walter Raleigh was the English aristocrat, writer, poet, soldier, courtier, spy, and explorer well known for popularizing tobacco in England. He persuaded Queen Elizabeth I to try smoking in 1600 and was beheaded in 1648. (Ronnie)
Sad but true....the landscape is the ashtray for the addicted. (said sanctimoniously from one who eventually successfully kicked the habit ;).
9 Sep 2013 8:30pm
I wonder what would the Marlboro Man say about the discarded butts tossed everywhere ! Nice compo Ronnie - I like it !!
9 Sep 2013 8:39pm
@John Jungklaus: Yeah . . how things have changed . . . (Ronnie)
What is necessary it to make so that they understand?
9 Sep 2013 8:45pm
@Mamyni: Y'd think the habit would have 'died' out by now (pun intended) but it saddens me to see youngsters smoking . . (Ronnie)
Looks like all the cigarette smoke has faded the sign!
9 Sep 2013 8:47pm
@Elaine Hancock: Yes, that where we started from . . and those walls look to be gummed with nicotine : not much processing to that. (Ronnie)
cigarettes not only destroy your lungs?
your composition is brilliant! ;-))
9 Sep 2013 9:23pm
haha funny, cigarette butts really irritate my eyesight :-))
10 Sep 2013 12:35am
@Abena: Yeah, the butts don't bother me much but the smoke I hate. (Ronnie)
Quel contraste entre la pancarte et ce que l'on trouve par-terre.
Amitié
10 Sep 2013 3:25am
@Nicou: Je vous remercie, Nicou. (L&R)
If anyone is smoking in my house, they'd better be on fire! Oh, wait, is Arlo visiting?
10 Sep 2013 4:12am
@B. Thomas: Arlo is out working in a prestige china gallery . . no smoking there, thankfully. (Ronnie)
I like the vintage look of your composition .... but even with banned: man gives a lot of waste ;-)
10 Sep 2013 5:05am
@Manola: Thanks . . yes, the problem does not really go away. (R)
A rare atmospheric and evocative image! I don't smoke but somehow find these words of Raleigh (found on his tobacco pouch after his execution) sort of touching: "It was my companion at that most miserable time..."
10 Sep 2013 5:26am
@hugo poon: Yes, I read those in my 'research' here. Can learn a lot at O2S ! (Prof. Ronnie)
I had to go to Wikipedia to get the connection between tobacco and Sir Walter. Thanks!
10 Sep 2013 9:29am
@Anita: ha ha . . yes, it was an 'English' thing. (Ronnie)
Lol, wonderful combination composition. That's a whole lot of cigarette butts considering the warning...
10 Sep 2013 11:57am
@Bettina: Yes, since smoking in buildings was banned in the UK, it takes place outside now with these same consequences. (Ronnie)
Good picture :-)) Haleja.
Happy ST day for both of you ,my good friend!
10 Sep 2013 2:00pm
intéressante composition où le message peut en avertir certains
10 Sep 2013 2:23pm
Its funny that in some countries they would use the word "illegal" whereas in some others they would use "against the law".
10 Sep 2013 2:26pm
Two fine shots made very funny with this conversation. A winner for sure.
10 Sep 2013 2:30pm
Thanks for the interesting explanation, now I see the light!
I suppose he was beheaded for smoking in public rooms... (:-)
10 Sep 2013 3:09pm
@Longroute: Sounds like a fit punishment ! (Ronnie)
Another excellent and funny image Wonderful composition I like!
10 Sep 2013 7:02pm
I always enjoy your pictures so much. They make me smile.
11 Sep 2013 2:50am
Sir Walter Raleigh.... mmm, good pipe tobacco!
Good, Lilly!
11 Sep 2013 6:27am
@Paco Díaz: Yes, quite possible this posting will get someone re-started on smoking just by all the mention, Paco . . (Ronnie)
As always dialogue and excellent image! I dedicate my best smile! A hug, Adela
11 Sep 2013 9:56am
@Adela Fonts: Smiles are always welcome here - a hug for you. (Ronnie)
oh yes, they've definitely been a nuisance for all these years ... !!!
