My parents bought a similar TV in early 70's. I don't remember it smelled or not unfortunately.

Having just finished clearing out my late brother's house, we threw out several tvs like yours, Ronnie. Maybe I should have saved one so you would have some spare parts?

Looks like you have a vertical hold problem on that old TV. I'm sure there is a vacuum tube inside that needs to be replaced, but I think you'll need a time machine to find a TV repair shop now-a-days.
